Since it's introduction as a piece of safety equipment for the use of off-road and highway motorcycle riding, the motorcycle helmet has changed and improved greatly, mostly due to technology.  As a means of protecting race car drivers, the first effective crash helmet was designed in 1954.  Seeing the value of wearing motorcycle helmets, the Las Angeles police department mandated the use of helmets for all of their motorcycle patrolmen.  This policy was implemented in 1955.  Because of their leadership and forward thinking, the use of motorcycle helmets became a standard necessity for motorcycle riding safety.  Oddly enough, the designs that have been developed and improved over the years for football helmets have been incorporated into the use of motorcycle helmets.
